~Southern Hospitality from the Top of the Blue Ridge Mountains~

The Smoky Mountains of North Carolina are very special to Senior Golfers of America, and we have quite a few extra-special SGA members who live in the Asheville/Waynesville area. In 1913, the historic Grove Park Inn was built by hand from boulders blasted out of Sunset Mountain, where it sits, rising over a 12-month period from groundbreaking to grand opening, which was no small feat in that era.

Boulders forming the exterior walls arrived on site via “automobile train”—a Packard truck pulling up to 15 wagonloads of stone at a time—and were laid with their rough edges facing outwards. This detail was expressly ordered by architect Fred Seely, who implored that “not a piece of stone should be visible to the eye except the time-eaten face given to it by the thousands of years of sun and rain that had beaten upon it as it had lain on the mountainside.” Dear SGA members from all over the country, you will enjoy the experience of this unique architecture.

A Top Resort Course
The Grove Park golf course first opened in the late 1800s; a redesign in 1923 by the great Donald Ross makes the course what it is today. A classic design and a joy to play, the par-70 course was restored in 2002 to get closer to its original Ross roots. It plays just over 6,000 yards, and Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus have enjoyed the classic variety of holes. Grove Park has been ranked as one of the top resort courses in America by various golf magazines.

Below the crest of Sunset Mountain, the course is routed through gentle hills with fairways lined by mature hardwoods. It features elevated tees and greens. Some of the fairways can be a bit narrow, putting a premium on accuracy and course management. The greens, in typical Ross style, can be difficult, so a good short game will come in handy. Water features and native areas add to the challenge. There is no driving range, but there is a chipping green and putting green.

A Special Invitation
Our lively and hospitable local area SGA members who belong to Springdale/Cold Mountain Club have invited us to play one of our rounds on their beautiful golf course. This is just about 35 minutes from the Grove Park Inn. Transportation to Springdale will be included as well as happy hour with small plates after the round. Participants may choose to go out to Springdale, to play another round at the Grove Park Course, or to limit themselves to just two days of golf.  Just let us know what will be best for you!

The Springdale course and clubhouse were completely redone in 2018 to become a true “Secluded and Peaceful Mountain Golf Resort” experience for its members and guests. The brand-new Rocky Face Tavern restaurant is lovely, and the course is a  delight to play. Well-maintained, challenging, a pleasure from first tee to 18th green, the course at Springdale offers views and settings that bring a sense of peace to even the most frustrating shot. It will be fun to join SGA greats Bob & Es Cummings, Edwina Gates, Candy & Danny Pole, Tim & Kate Rickards, and Ken & Sarah Young and others at their beautiful home club and to experience their true mountain hospitality.

Accommodations
Accommodations at the Grove Park Inn are Premium Guest Rooms, more modern and spacious than those in the historic wing. Each has a king-size or two queen beds and features a view of the Spa gardens or the resort’s landscaping. To upgrade to mountain view guest room, please contact our office.

Our SGA F.o.G.s (Friends of Golfers), will love the Grove Park Inn. A beautiful spa and some cute retail shops are onsite, and a trolley runs into town from the resort. Lined with historic buildings featuring spectacular Art Deco architecture, renowned restaurants, art galleries, street performers and endless boutique shops, Asheville is the perfect locale for guests to explore and immerse themselves in the area’s rich and unique culture. FoGs will enjoy a luncheon overlooking the mountain on the first day of the event, and a sightseeing/shopping tour the next day.
