Sea Island Golf Club
Sea Island, Georgia
December 6, 7, 8, 9, 2020
The Cloister at Sea Island, Georgia has been a getaway for the well-heeled since 1928. It is a special, beautiful, and elegant resort in a gorgeous natural setting with luxurious accommodations, pristine golf courses, and impeccable service. SGA founder Bob Swanson adored The Cloister, and when he passed away in 2008, we dedicated this annual event to his memory.
Visiting Sea Island every year at the start of the holidays is a tradition that the Senior Golfers has enjoyed for 42 consecutive years. We will do things a little bit differently this year and will be very respectful of CDC guidelines and social distancing. Sea Island has been very busy this summer welcoming guests and we know that they are doing everything perfectly by the book and extremely safely. As you know, golf is one of the best things to be involved with during this time; the Cloister offers horseback riding, skeet shooting, and falconry as other socially distancing activities.
Many dignitaries have visited Sea Island over the years; and the G8 Summit was held here in 2004. In 1928, Calvin Coolidge began the presidential tradition of planting an oak tree on the grounds of the resort. Presidents Eisenhower, Ford, Carter, Clinton, and both Bushes have continued the tradition. When the Cloister was renovated in 2006, the live oak trees surrounding the property were dug up and stored in a nursery while the renovations were completed. The original trees were then transported back to the Cloister and planted around the new resort buildings. One of the most beautiful features about Sea Island is its stately live oaks.
Plantation, Retreat, and Seaside are award-winning, first-class golf courses. Plantation and Seaside play out of the pro shop at The Lodge, and Retreat is just a mile or so down the road. In the tradition of Scottish links, Seaside is the premier course at Sea Island. It winds along the coast among dunes and tidal creeks and is breathtaking in scenery. Plantation plays through oak tree forests and has expansive fairways and beautiful views. On the day of arrival, an optional scramble on Plantation is included in SGA’s package. Davis Love III and his brother Mark renovated the Retreat Course back in 2000. The undulating greens and numerous bunkers create a challenging and enjoyable course.
The luxurious and beautiful guest rooms at the Cloister and the Lodge have the finest amenities of any hotel. Each room is uniquely designed, with lustrous wood furnishings, exposed beam ceilings, overstuffed chairs, hardwood floors, fine linens, and lovely art.
The Cloister is a very special place to SGA. Located an hour and a half from Jacksonville International Airport (JAX), it is also
serviced by Delta at Brunswick Airport (BQK), a half hour from Sea Island.
SGA FOGs (Friends of Golfers) will have a luncheon together on the porch at The Lodge one day. The next day we will go on a shopping excursion throughout St. Simons Island. Prepare to do some serious Christmas shopping here! Friends of Golfers also enjoy excursions to Jekyll Island and horseback riding on the beach.
