On the Gulf Coast of Alabama, surrounded by beautiful Mobile Bay, lies a hidden jewel, rich with tradition, alive with activity, and overflowing with generous hospitality. This is the famous Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa, now a part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection. Set on 550 acres of stunning natural beauty, the Grand is a modern sanctuary of golf, tennis, beach, pools, and spa – an enchanting destination filled with gracious Southern charm.
The Grand Hotel continues a legacy which began over 170 years ago. Since opening its doors in 1847, The Grand Hotel has taken pride in a heritage of military service and as a gracious host to American presidents, world leaders and generations of families. Alabamians refer to the Grand as the “Queen of Southern Resorts.”
From its strategic location on Mobile Bay, the Grand has also played a pivotal role in defending our nation as a vital military staging site as well as its ties to American freedom spanning two centuries and two wars. Standing as a hospital during the Civil War and later as host to key training operations during World War II, this is hallowed ground. It was here, on the sands of Point Clear, where Allied forces’ finest trained in Operation Ivory Soap, a classified military operation that played a vital part in World War II’s final push. Each day, the Grand Hotel honors its wartime history, concluding with a cannon firing on the edge of Mobile Bay.
The venerable Lakewood Club at The Grand Hotel Marriott Resort, Golf Club & Spa, has seen a lot in its days. It has hosted Bob Hope, President Gerald Ford, and Dr. Billy Graham, to name a few of the more famous players. It’s been through renovations and hurricanes and still remains a showcase for great golf in the South. First built in 1947, Lakewood Club showcases fairways lined with 200-year-old oaks and a dramatic signature hole, the 14th on Azalea.
With the addition or expansion of 10 water features over the span of the 36 holes, as well as other interesting architectural features, golfers are faced with decisions at every corner. Lakewood’s two 18-hole courses present varying degrees of difficulty to promise a memorable golf experience for both the novice and the experienced golfer alike. Where the Dogwood course might seem a tad bit easier, and the Azalea, more of a challenge, both courses can play to your liking depending on your selection of tees. With five sets of tees per hole, your decision should be rather easy.
Nearby Fairhope is a lovely small town of charming cottages and traditional Southern landscaping. Hopefully the azaleas and dogwood will be in bloom for our visit. FoGs (Friends of Golfers) will get together for lunch at the hotel, and will plan a trip to the art galleries in Fairhope.
