Mount Desert Island – the largest island in Maine
The Senior Golfers have been visiting the great state of Maine since 1985, playing golf and enjoying the weather, delicious seafood, and beautiful scenery over and over in the Pine Tree State. This year we will make our first visit to one of the most picturesque towns of all, Bar Harbor. Named because of the sand bar that connects Bar Harbor to Bar Island at low tide, the town was originally settled in 1763 on the northeast shore of Mount Desert Island.
There’s something magical about Bar Harbor. The American Planning Association named Bar Harbor Village Green as one of their top ten Great Places in America for Public Spaces. The natural beauty of the area is punctuated with ocean cliffs and rocky beaches, glacier‐formed lakes and valleys, unobstructed mountain vistas, and boreal forest. This has been captured in the works of Thomas Cole, Frederic Edwin Church, Fitz Henry Lane, and many other great artists. Though it is spelled Mount “Desert” Island, Desert is actually pronounced “dessert,” the French pronunciation, in homage to Samuel de Champlain, the celebrated French voyager who explored and named the island in 1604.
Maine’s Oldest Golf Course
Established in 1888, Kebo Valley Golf Club is the oldest golf club in Maine, and the eighth oldest golf club in the United States. Kebo has tested the skills of many of the country’s finest players, most influential politicians, and leaders of industry. Each of the course’s spectacular and well-maintained golf holes will challenge and excite players of any level.
Nestled between Cadillac and Dorr Mountains, the fairways at Kebo Valley are routed in an old-fashioned out-and-back manner close to Acadia National Park. The 399-yard 13th hole is an abiding memory for many as it features chocolate drop mounds in front of a sharply sloping green that tilts from right to left and back to front. Kebo Valley is a true New England gem.
Kebo Valley Club is just two minutes by car, or a fifteen-minute walk, from the Inn on Mount Desert.
Modern Amenities in a Superb Setting
Located in downtown Bar Harbor, The Inn on Mount Desert provides a perfect setting to relax, to explore the nearby Acadia National Park and to enjoy the attractions of Bar Harbor. The location of The Inn on Mount Desert is very convenient with its close proximity to the golf course, to shops & galleries, restaurants and bars, and the waterfront. The shuttle stop for the free Island Explorer is within walking distance.
Set on tree-lined Mount Desert Street, the year-round inn was completed in 2018. The Inn’s nautical theme features local Maine artwork. In addition to splendid furnishings, all rooms offer modern amenities such as smart televisions, free wireless internet, mini-fridges, microwaves, and air conditioning.
A few rooms are available for upgrades at the nearby Harborview Hotel, a part of the Opal Collection, the group including Samoset Resort. These rooms are waterfront and just a few minutes away from Mount Desert Inn and Kebo Valley Club. If you wish to upgrade, please reply to this email, or call Catherine on her cellphone at 310-600-9278.
Welcome, SGA FoGs (Friends of Golfers), and off-duty golfers…
Every Monday through Friday at 4:30 PM, Bar Harbor Whale Watch sets out on hour-and-a-half catamaran tours in search of humpback, finback, and minke whales. All you will need to do is keep an eye on the horizon and sit back with a glass of wine. The sunset views from the water are complimentary!
Just a stone’s throw from the Inn on Mount Desert, Acadia National Park’s 120 miles of hiking trails beckon the weary traveler to take a stroll into the wilderness. A good start is the one-mile Jordan Pond Loop, which winds through the evergreen forest and features lovely pond views.
Until 5:00 PM, vintners at Bar Harbor cellars walk wine lovers through the nuances of their organic grape and fruit wine during free wine tastings in a restored Civil War-era barn. What started on a whim in 2004 has bloomed into a collection of dry whites, fruity reds, and fragrant dessert wines all made less than a mile from the coastline.
Bangor International Airport (BGR) is an hour’s drive to Bar Harbor. Portland (PWM) is 175 miles away. The smaller Bar Harbor Airport (BHB) is serviced by Cape Air and connects through Boston Logan. Rental car services are available at all.
