Florida Sunshine
El Campeon • Las Colinas
Mission Inn Golf Resort • Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida
February 23, 24, 25, 26, 2025

Florida as it used to be
SGA will make a trip to Mission Inn again in February of 2025. We have been visiting this classic resort since 1981, and it is a very special place to SGA. Located just 30 minutes northwest of Orlando in Howey-in-the-Hills, Mission Inn is a remarkable golf destination, featuring two championship golf courses developed in Florida’s most beautiful terrain. In a setting adorned with Spanish architecture, spring-fed lakes and historic oaks, The El Campeon and Las Colinas Courses provide 36 holes of golf unparalleled in Central Florida.

This privately-owned estate sprawls over 625 acres nestled in the hills, and includes upscale accommodations along with amenities expected at a top resort. One can spend hours walking the manicured grounds, admiring the ornate architecture and serene beauty of Mission Inn.

El Campeon
El Campeon has garnered many national awards and is annually recognized as one of the top 25 golf courses in Florida. The course was originally designed in 1926 by Charles E. Clarke of Troon, Scotland, and has since been renovated. With elevation changes of up to 85 feet and numerous water hazards (13 of the 18 holes), El Campeon is a challenge for even the seasoned golfers. Players of all abilities can enjoy a resort golf experience, however, as the design provides five sets of tees. There are a significant number of mild doglegs bending in either direction, with water hazards often dictating the routing.

Las Colinas
Las Colinas, which translates as “The Hills,” is the newer of two 18-hole courses. It offers a different challenge from El Campeon with its unique inland links design. Wide-open fairways and a gently rolling landscape lead to soft, receptive greens which are large and undulating. The classic architecture of the golf course calls for accurate shot placement but overall, the flatter and more forgiving Las Colinas is the less difficult of the two Mission Inn courses, although there still are many challenging holes. In addition to the two golf courses, Mission Inn offers extensive practice facilities and resort amenities including a fully-equipped fitness center and spa.

Accommodations
Accommodations will be in the low-rise Mission Inn resort, right on the golf course. All rooms have one king or two double beds, private porch overlooking the golf course, high-end refrigerator and microwave, coffee maker, spacious bathroom with bathtub and shower. This is a lovely part of the Sunshine State, and the weather should be very pleasant this time of the year.

Friends of Golfers
Friends of Golfers and Social Members enjoy the area very much. Just a couple of miles down the road is Yahala Bakery, “a Germany bakery like no other,” where the bakers start work before the sun rises each day and the warm smell of baking escapes onto the street before they’ve even opened. After golf, the Yahala biergarten welcomes everyone for sandwiches and treats along with a beer or two for relaxation. SGA FoGs will make a trip to nearby Mt. Dora, a charming small town with many shops, restaurants, bars, and several museums. Best of all, it’s fabulous to relax at Mission Inn and to enjoy “Florida as it used to be.”
