Crans-Montana, Switzerland is a stunning resort area rising high above the Rhone Valley to the peaks of the Valaisan Alps. It is known for its fresh air and sunshine, and situated in the Valais region, which some say is the prettiest region in Switzerland. With more than 300 sunny days a year, Valais is the country’s premier wine region, home to more than 22,000 wine growers and 700 winemakers. While Italian, French, and German-speaking cultures converge, and the predominant language changes from valley to valley, nearly everyone speaks English and is exceptionally welcoming to travelers from all over the world.
Hotel Royal is a luxurious property combining a fashionable contemporary atmosphere, elegance, and the welcoming warmth of a mountain chalet. It perfectly embodies the relaxed and stylish environment of the resort area. Completely refurbished in 2012 with all its original elegance, the decor sets the tone for the hotel’s lively evenings. The Alpine style of the hotel is lovely and it is set in a dramatic location surrounded by the Swiss Alps.
Golf was first played at Crans-Montana in Switzerland in 1905. With the start of the first world war, the course was abandoned and play did not resume until 1924, with the opening of Crans sur Sierre Golf Club. Jack Nicklaus redesigned the course in 1988, and Seve Ballestreos was called in to improve the course in 1995 and then two years later again to update the greens. The course was later named the Seve Ballestreos course and was the site of the famous chip shot by Seve in the 1993 European Masters to birdie the hole from behind a wall. With some of the prettiest scenery in all of Europe, Crans sur Sierre golf course is the most spectacularly scenic European Tour venue. Bring your camera and try to focus on your golf game instead of the views!
Sierre Golf Club was built originally as a 9 hole course. In 1993 it was made into 18 holes of beauty set against the majestic Swiss Alps with old trees, natural lakes, and beautiful wildlife. Stunning views of the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc can be seen from the course. The staff and members are extremely friendly, and the restaurant at the club grill has excellent food.
There is much beauty, history, and culture to explore for those that do not play golf. Fiesch Cable Car will take you on a spectacular ride to the top of Eggishorn peak, 9400 feet in altitude, with views across the border to Italy and France. Contemporary art museum Pierre Arnaud is just down the hill on Lake Louche, featuring works of surrealism and realism. The architecture of Switzerland is stunning, unique, and very different from other parts of Europe. Dining and enjoying wine alfresco while taking in the views is sure to be on SGA’s list.
