July 11-14, 2021
When the small bed and breakfast which inspired the Sonnenalp first opened in Germany in the early years of the 20th century, Vail, Colorado, wasn’t even on the map. As that humble German inn transformed into what would become a celebrated hotel and resort, its founders envisioned bringing their legacy of European hospitality and superior guest service to the United States. In the 1960s, the burgeoning village at the base of the Vail Ski Resort became the ideal location.
Owned and run by the Faessler family, whose ranch in Bavaria served as inspiration, Sonnenalp Hotel is in the heart of Vail village. Summertime options include golf at the resort’s private eighteen-hole course, and the choice among five restaurants, including the Swiss Chalet and the contemporary-American Ludwig’s. Guest accommodations have custom furnishings, fireplaces, flat-screen televisions, complimentary Wi-Fi and spacious bathrooms with heated floors. FOGs (Friends of Golfers) will love visiting the area. SGA will host a luncheon and an art/sightseeing excursion for SGA FOGs.
It All Starts With Golf
At Sonnenalp, the tagline is “It All Starts With Golf.” The course is just 15 minutes away from downtown Vail, easily accessed by hotel shuttle. The mountain layout features more dramatic elevation changes and the conditions are solid. The course sits at over 7200 feet elevation so be prepared to see your ball fly further than it likely ever has before. Listed as one of the top 100 resort courses by Golf Digest, Sonnenalp is challenging yet fun, and provides panoramic views of Colorado’s majestic beauty. The Sonnenalp Club features the best views in the entire Vail/Beaver Creek area.
